GH150/2 High Temperature Acoustic Emission Sensor

150 kHz resonant AE sensor for structural health monitoring in high-temperature environments up to 170°C

Description and Features

The GH150/2 is a 150 kHz high temperature acoustic emission sensor designed for structural health monitoring and NDT applications in industrial environments up to 170°C.

With a stainless steel housing, ceramic sensing face, IP68 protection and an integral 1.5m high-temperature cable with BNC connector, the GH150/2 provides reliable AE signal detection for pipelines, pressure vessels, storage tanks, plant equipment and offshore structures exposed to elevated temperatures.

When to Use GH150/2

GH150/2 is suitable when the monitored structure is exposed to moderately high surface temperature and a standard room-temperature AE sensor is not recommended.

Typical use cases include:

  • AE monitoring of pipelines and pressure vessels in process plants
  • Storage tank inspection or long-term structural health monitoring
  • Offshore platform structures exposed to harsh environments
  • High-temperature metal components where 150 kHz AE detection is required
  • Applications requiring a compact sensor with integral high-temperature cable

GH150/2 is NOT recommended when the sensor mounting position is continuously exposed to temperatures above 170°C. For higher-temperature applications, please contact our technical team to select a higher-temperature AE sensor or a waveguide-based installation solution.

If the monitoring target has strong low-frequency vibration, heavy flow noise or long propagation distance, sensor selection should be evaluated based on material, attenuation, background noise and test objective.

Applications

GH150/2 is designed for acoustic emission monitoring in harsh or moderately high-temperature industrial environments. It can be used for detecting and monitoring AE activity related to crack growth, structural defects, leakage-related events and other active damage mechanisms in metallic structures.

Common applications include:

  • Pipeline monitoring
  • Pressure vessel testing
  • Storage tank monitoring
  • Offshore platform structural monitoring
  • Plant equipment monitoring
  • High-temperature structural health monitoring

Installation Notes

For stable AE signal detection, the GH150/2 sensor should be mounted firmly on a clean contact surface. Proper coupling and hold-down pressure are important for repeatable sensitivity, especially in high-temperature monitoring. See “AE Sensor Coupling and Installation” for detailed information.

Recommended installation steps:

(1) Clean the mounting surface before sensor installation

(2) Use suitable high-temperature couplant based on the actual surface temperature

(3) Keep the sensor face in stable contact with the structure

(4) Avoid cable tension, sharp bending or direct mechanical impact

(5) Verify the channel response before testing or long-term monitoring

Compatible Accessories

- PAS / PAV preamplifier

- H20 hold-down

FAQ

Q1: What is the maximum working temperature of GH150/2?

GH150/2 can operate from -20°C to 170°C. It is suitable for moderately high-temperature acoustic emission monitoring where a standard AE sensor may not be appropriate. If the mounting position is above 170°C, a higher-temperature sensor or waveguide-based installation should be considered.

Q2: What is the resonant frequency of GH150/2?

GH150/2 has a resonant frequency of 150 kHz and a frequency range of 60 kHz to 400 kHz. This makes it suitable for many common AE monitoring applications on metallic structures, including pipelines, pressure vessels and storage tanks.

Q3: Is GH150/2 suitable for pressure vessel monitoring?

Yes. GH150/2 can be used for AE monitoring of pressure vessels, especially when the sensor installation area is exposed to elevated temperature but remains within the sensor’s working temperature range. The final sensor selection should also consider material, wall thickness, attenuation, test pressure and background noise.

Q4: Does GH150/2 have a built-in preamplifier?

No. GH150/2 is a passive acoustic emission sensor. It should be used with a compatible external preamplifier, such as PAS or PAV, and connected to an AE acquisition system for signal conditioning, acquisition and analysis.

Q5: What cable and connector does GH150/2 use?

GH150/2 uses an integral high-temperature cable with a BNC connector. The integrated cable design helps improve reliability in harsh environments and reduces the risk of connector-related installation problems near the sensor.

Q6: How should I choose between GH150/2 and other AE sensors?

Choose GH150/2 when your application requires a 150 kHz AE sensor for elevated-temperature environments up to 170°C. If your application requires lower-frequency detection, broadband waveform analysis, built-in preamplification, or operation above 170°C, another AE sensor model may be more suitable.
