High Temperature Acoustic Emission Sensors
AE sensors for elevated-temperature testing, monitoring, and harsh industrial environments
High temperature acoustic emission sensors are designed for AE testing and monitoring on components where standard AE sensors cannot be directly used due to elevated surface temperature. In high-temperature applications, engineers usually choose between two solutions: direct installation of a high-temperature AE sensor, or a waveguide rod with a standard AE sensor installed away from the heat source. The selection depends on operating temperature, exposure time, coupling method, signal attenuation, installation space, and monitoring requirements.
Qawrums provides high-temperature AE sensors and waveguide-based installation solutions for pressure vessels, pipelines, valves, boilers, furnaces, thermal equipment, and other harsh industrial environments.

High Temperature AE Sensor or Waveguide Solution?
For high-temperature acoustic emission applications, there are usually two installation options: using a high-temperature AE sensor directly on the test surface, or using a waveguide rod with a standard AE sensor installed away from the heat source. The best choice depends on surface temperature, exposure time, installation space, coupling method, signal attenuation, and monitoring requirements.
High-temperature AE sensors provide a more direct signal path and are suitable when the sensor can safely withstand the operating temperature. They usually offer better signal transmission, easier installation, and more reliable source location compared with long waveguide structures. However, their temperature rating, cable type, coupling material, and exposure duration must be carefully checked.
A waveguide solution is recommended when the surface temperature exceeds the sensor rating, when long-term thermal protection is required, or when the sensor must be kept away from radiation, steam, flame, or other harsh conditions. The limitation is that the waveguide may introduce signal attenuation, frequency response changes, additional reflections, and installation complexity. Therefore, calibration and field verification are important before formal monitoring.
If you are not sure which solution is suitable, please provide the surface temperature, material, AE source type, installation conditions, and monitoring duration. Our technical team can recommend a high-temperature AE sensor or a waveguide-based installation solution.
| Solution | Advantages | Limitations | Recommended Use |
| High-temperature AE sensor | More direct signal path, better signal transmission, easier source location, simpler installation | Limited by sensor temperature rating, cable, coupling material, and exposure time | Medium to high temperature applications where the sensor can safely contact the surface |
| Waveguide + standard AE sensor | Protects the sensor from extreme heat, steam, flame, or radiation; easier sensor replacement | Signal attenuation, frequency response change, reflections, more complex installation | Very high temperature surfaces, long-term monitoring, or harsh environments beyond sensor rating |
